Description |
Side 1: Reel-to-reel tape recorded by Louis Armstrong and given to pianist Jimmy Laing in Las Vegas in 1957. Contents include: recording from the wings of a special Christmas show at the Apollo Theater on December 25, 1952. Armstrong can occasionally be heard talking backstage and one of his friends coes on from time to time to narrate what is going on onstage (sound quality is not very good for the onstage entertainment). "When You're Smiling" (unidentified vocalist); Sy Oliver leads a big band in a medley of Christmas songs; comedy routine by Mantan Moreland; Moreland and Bud Harris do "Lady Be Good," singing and dancing; narrator talks about how "sharp" Moreland is and breathlessly describes their dancing; comedy continues while narrator tells us Louis and his All Stars are now onstage; Moreland and Harris finish their whiskey routine before the All Stars play; "When It's Sleepy Time Down South," "Indiana" (incomplete, continued on other side). Side 2: Reel-to-reel tape recorded by Louis Armstrong and given to pianist Jimmy Laing in Las Vegas in 1957. Contents include: recording from the wings of a special Christmas show at the Apollo Theater on December 25, 1952. This side picks up during a set by the All Stars: "Indiana," "C'est Si Bon," "New Orleans Function," "Margie" (friend narrating tape says they're out of time). Recordings of sound recordings: "Ain't It the Truth" (Louis Armstrong), "Silent George," "Nu Quarto 'E Luna" (Ray Martino), "In a Mist" (Bix Beiderbecke) (rest of reel has speeded up tape). |
