Chapter presumably written for Louis’s second autobiography, dictated to one of his secretaries (probably Velma Ford) in 1955. This manuscript is about Louis’s 55th birthday celebration on July 4, 1955. Four pages (including title page). Contents include: Louis performing at Basin Street, alternating with the Ralph Sutton Trio; Louis lists people in attendance (Joe Glaser, Charlie Shavers, Dorothy Kilgallen, Eddie Barefield, Lucille Armstrong, Red Allen, Russell “Big Chief” Moore); lists some of the requests he played; talks about Duke Ellington and Jimmy Dorsey joining him onstage; eating cake; breaking his tradition of celebrating his birthday at the “Blue Note”; performing “The Boppenpoof Song”; requests from Charlie Shavers; spending the night with Lucille, playing tapes; Lucille invited friends over for dinner when Louis woke up (mentions William Green); having a picnic in the backyard; Louis inviting the men into his den to show him his pictures on the ceiling and wall; everyone saying good night; Louis having a wonderful time because of “the family-like atmosphere.” |
