Description |
Scope: Ceremony honoring Louis in Boston in 1952. Louis rehearses at home for apperance on "All Star Revue." Recordings of sound recordings. Originally cataloged in ”Tape Catalog #2, Part 1” (see Manuscripts, 1987.2.23). Tape box decorated with photographs (Louis, Louis with fan). Contents (as on compact disc reference copy): As of 9/16/10, only a preservation copy exists on four CDs, without any of the material broken into separate tracks. Disc 1: Louis introduce a tape of a WNEX radio broadcast of a ceremony honoring Louis at Storyville in Boston, Massachusetts in December 1952, hosted by George Wein. After remarks by Nat Hentoff, Armstrong steps up to the microphone to tell a dirty joke about a hamburger, mentioning that he had told this joke in New Orleans during a concert the previous May (mentions Myra Menville). Tallulah Bankhead offers a tribute to Louis via tape and mentions looking forward to seeing Louis on her television show next week (Louis appeared on "All Star Revue" with Bankhead on December 20, 1952. For an acetate recording of that show, see 1987.3.2531-1987.3.2532). Louis is presented a scroll from Richard C. Watkins and Jim Randall of Boston University and speaks about how honored he is. Broadcast ends. Next track is "Struttin' With Some Barbecue" by Louis and the All Stars (Trummy Young, Bob McCracken, Marty Napoleon, Arvell Shaw and Cozy Cole) from their recent European trip. Louis then introduces the next portion of the tape, Louis, Lucille and Fred Ware in Corona rehearsing for Louis's December 20, 1952 appearance on the "All Star Review" television program. Louis sings "Who Needs What Moonlight" a capella. Louis, Lucille and Fred Ware read the script with Louis at the Soothsayer, Lucille as Cleopatra and Ware as Marc Antony. Disc 2: Continuation of rehearsal for "All Star Revue."
