Description |
Scope: Recording of the Fleischmann's Yeast Show from April 9, 1937. Louis at the Sutherland Hotel. Recordings of sound recordings. Originally cataloged in ”Tape Catalog #2, Part 1” (see Manuscripts, 1987.2.23). Tape box decorated with a photograph of Louis with sailors. Contents (as on compact disc reference copy): Disc 1: Recording of the Fleischman's Yeast radio program hosted by Louis: Louis introduces the program; station identification; Track 2: "When It's Sleepy Time Down South," opening of program; Track 3: "Swing That Music" (Louis Armstrong); Track 4: Louis introduces Amanda Randolph; "The Half of Me" (Amanda Randolph); Track 5: Louis introduces Little Billy who does a tap dance routine; Track 6: Louis introduces the Four Nuts of Rhythm; "The Sheik of Araby" (The Four Nuts of Rhythm); Track 7: "Pennies From Heaven" (Louis Armstrong); Track 8: commercials; Track 9: Louis introduces the next selection; "Them There Eyes (Louis Armstrong); Track 10: Louis introduces Eddie Green and Gee Gee James; comedy routine (Eddie Green, Gee Gee James); Track 11: "Tiger Rag" (Louis Armstrong); Track 12: commercials; Track 13: close of program ("When it's Sleepy Time Down South" theme); station identification. Track 14: "The Okeh Laughing Record," Track 15: Armstrong at the Hotel Sutherland in Chicago, introducing a woman, who speaks for the tape recorder (in his handwritten tape catalog, Armstrong identifies her as "Madam La Zongua"); Track 16: "Pops' Confessin'," (Dizzy Gillespie with vocal by Joe Carroll); Track 17: "Oo-Shoo-Be-Doo-Be" and "Blue Skies" (Dizzy Gillespie with vocals by Joe Carroll); Track 18: "Umbrella Man," (Dizzy Gillespie); Track 19: "How Do I Sigh Over You, "I Couldn't Beat the Rap" and "Bopsie's Blues" [unfinished] (Dizzy Gillespie, with vocals by Melvin Moore). |
