Description |
One-hour documentary originally aired on WYES television in 1990. Hosted and narrated by Charmaine Neville, it's the story of Louis's years in New Orleans, as well as history of the music, people and places of that city during the first decades of the 20th century. Includes interviews with Bruce Boyd Raeburn, Dr. Jack Stewart, Donald Marquis, Tad Jones, Dr. Joseph Logsdon, Chester Zardis, Dr. John Jaye, Dr. Michael White, Bill Russell, Al Rose, Richard Allen, Sherwood Mangiapane, Jim Russell, Louis's half-brother Henry Armstrong and Danny Barker (for the complete raw footage of Barker's interview for this special see 2009.1.80). Also includes archival interviews (video and audio) of Louis, "Papa Jack" Laine, Peter Davis, Dr. Edmond Souchon, Johnny Wiggs, Stella Oliver, Nick La Rocca, Peter Bocage, Punch Miller and Babe Phillips. Discussions of Willie Armstrong (including a rare photo), Mayann Armstrong, Buddy Bolden, King Oliver, the Colored Waif's Home and more. Includes a segment on Louis coming back to New Orleans to be named "King of the Zulus" in 1949 as well as a brief wrap-up of his later visits, as well as his ten-year refusal to perform there between 1956 and 1965. Closes with footage of New Orleans's tribute to Louis after his death, along with an excerpt of a eulogy delivered by then-mayor Moon Landrieu. |
