Two sets of photocopies of a 16-page handwritten letter from Louis Armstrong to clarinetist Slim Evans (real name Otis Neirouter), dated September 31, 1967. Letter is written on "Satchmo" stationery, recto and verso. Armstrong writes from his den in Corona. Just returned from Reno, Nevada, where Dr. Schiff, the doctor who traveled with Armstrong, insisted he go to the hospital because of difficulty breathing in Nevada's altitude. Being bathed by the hospital nurses. Dr. David Roberts, a doctor in Reno who looks like the pianist who played with Armstrong on "Porgy and Bess." Joe Glaser, "the best friend I've ever had," cautioning Armstrong to take care of himself during his two weeks off. Playing at the Sunset Cafe in Chicago in 1926. Playing first chair in Carroll Dickerson's Orchestra and seeing great entertainers in the audience: Buck and Bubbles, Rector and Cooper, Covan and Ruffin, and Bill Robinson. Joe Glaser was a big man in Chicago. Playing second cornet with Joe "King" Oliver at the Lincoln Gardens. Meeting Earl Hines. Joe Glaser giving Armstrong billing as the "World's Greatest Cornetist" with Carroll Dickerson and defending doing so to a gangster. Good food, including shrimp, clams, oysters, spaghetti. Armstrong's mother making red beans and rice when he was a child. Selling newspapers and singing tenor in a quartet at 12 years old; quartet's theme song was "My Brazilian Beauty." Lyrics of "My Brazilian Beauty." Thanks for Slim Evans's letters. |
