Scope: Interview with Louis in Sydney, Australia. Contents (as on compact disc reference copy): Tracks 1-5: Interview with Louis and Lucille Armstrong on "My World" radio program with Tom Jacobs and Dorothy Jenner (better known-and addressed throughout-as "Andrea") on Radio 2GB, Sydney, Australian, 1964: open of interview; Andrea mentions chasing Louis for days; Louis talks about prior commitments and how busy he's been (does interview in his pajamas); talks about grabbing a nap with Lucille in between two shows and before a TV appearance; Andrea compliments Louis on his music; Track 2: Andrea brings up retirement and Louis jokingly asks to change the subject; hints that maybe he wouldn't travel as much but all he knows is the horn and singing "and I ain't fixin' to go back to that mule"; talks about how he would stay around music and maybe teach at a music school in Corona ("that's a little town outside of New York"); would like to instill in the kids what he learned from Peter Davis and King Oliver; Track 3: talk about traveling; Louis says he doesn't feel like laying off; even if he takes time off, he still brings his trumpet; tells story of going on cruise ship with Lucille for two months and every port they stopped at, he had to sign autographs and warmup; talks about warmth felt from Australian fans; Louis talks about a lady who made coffee for Jack Benny; talks about TV show he just did, having to take four encores on "Hello, Dolly!"; "everybody's digging the happiness of life and Satchmo's in town and he digs life"; mentions Lucille; Tom compliments Louis on his philosophy; Louis talks about gumbo from New Orleans; Louis talks about how long it's been since he's been to New Orleans but he's planning on returning the next year; talks about how even when he had nothing, he enjoyed playing the music; "I wouldn't give a damn if they had ten trillion dollars, they can't be no happier than Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong and Lucille"; not wanting an estate; Mayann's advice to "enjoy the rudimentals and the hell with everything else"; Track 4: Andrea talks about her love for Louis and Lucille; Louis talks about love and "narrow-minded people" who might have trouble with a "spade" talking to an "ofay" woman; talks about his gestures to the audience, mugging; Louis names "When It's Sleepy Time Down South" and "Blueberry Hill" and "Mack the Knife" as his favorites; mentions "So Long Dearie" and "Hello, Dolly!" and how the audience reacts to them; Louis says he could still play numbers he gets requests for (names "Mahogany Hall Stomp," "West End Blues," "When You're Smiling") but says when he played those songs every night, he "starved to death"; talks about "Hello, Dolly!" alerting people that he's still in business; sometimes they'd be stranded; says that if he played those other numbers, they'd probably get no response; talks about how much the kids love "Hello, Dolly!"; mentions the Beatles; Track 5: close of interview; Louis says he's scared of Andrea; Louis gives a message to the fans; mentions Swiss Kriss. |
