Description |
Scope: Recordings of sound recordings. Louis in a Boston hotel room with Velma Middleton, Trummy Young and the Jones Brothers, Clyde, Herb and Max, listening to music and talking. Originally cataloged in ”Tape Catalog #2, Part 1” (see Manuscripts, 1987.2.23). Contents (as on compact disc reference copy): Track 1: "It's All in the Game" (Louis Armstrong and Gordon Jenkins); Track 2: Louis in a Boston hotel room with Velma Middleton, Doc Pugh, Trummy Young and the Jones Brothers, Clyde, Herb and Max. "(Oooh! Look-A There) Ain't She Pretty" (The Jones Brothers); Track 3: Louis and the Jones Brothers finish the previous record and talk briefly about it (Louis says, "That sonbitch was gone!"); "Body and Soul" (Herb Jones feature) (Louis and Jones Brothers can be heard talking faintly in the background; Louis mentions a bottle of beer and a coke); Track 4: Conversation between Louis, the Jones Brothers and Velma Middleton (drinks are passed out and Velma mentions that "Pops bought a whole case of this); record starts and Clyde Jones stops it, calling it a bad one; Louis tells him not to worry, "we have plenty of space" and restarts it; "You Broke My Heart" [?] (Clyde Jones with organ accompaniment); Track 5: Velma asks Louis if this is going to be a recording where you can't hear the voices. Louis assures her the wires are correct. "Think of Me Little Mama" (Trummy Young vocal, with Jimmie Lunceford); Track 6: Velma laughing at Louis (says something about him staggering?); "Endie" (Louis Armstrong); Track 7: Velma sings a few lines of "Candy." Louis scats a few lines of "Sugar." "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" (Louis Armstrong); Track 8: Louis demonstrates his reel-to-reel tape index and numbering system; Unidentified selection (Jones Brothers); record skips; Track 9: Louis tries the previous record again but it continues skipping; Clyde Jones sounds relieved but Louis tells him, "Maybe your children, your great grandchildren will enjoy it." "I Love You" (Jones Brothers); (laughter in background, especially from Velma); Track 10: Laughter continues. Louis mentions Joe Frisco. Velma mentions cold cuts, sardines and onions and what it did to her breath; "Night and Day" (Jones Brothers [?], unfinished); (conversation continues in the background); Track 11: Louis stops previous record and puts on another one, "If I Loved You" (unidentified female vocalist with piano backing) (incomplete). Track 12: Completion of "If I Loved You"; Track 13: "Love is Where You Find It" (unidentified female vocalist with piano backing); Track 14: Short conversation; "So Beats My Heart" (Jones Brothers); Track 15: [Unidentified selection] (Louis has written "I Love You" in his tape catalog, but that isn't right) (Jones Brothers) (Louis talks angry in the background, mostly unintelligible; threatens to "tell him" and "fight his ass"; mentions the guy coming to Corona and looking like a mountain and "like Frankenstein"; Track 16: Louis continues complaining about entertainer and dancer Johnny Taylor; Velma mentions that he wouldn't show his face the previous night; Louis mentions Harlem Globetrotter Tommy Brookins and how everything "he touched turned to shit" and how it's the same with Johnny Taylor; Louis says, "What he don't fuck up, he'll steal, God damn it and that's what he tried to do to me. And one of these days, I've got to tell him. I just don't want to do it now, you know, concentrating on my lip and that shit. I probably, you know what I mean, get in trouble, that's all. It's bad enough down there fighting that fucking horn. Here's a son-of-a-bitch you're being a friend to him and he hand me that shit. You know I don't want that shit out of Johnny, man." One of the Jones brothers says he'll tell him if he sees him. Velma mentions Taylor trying to "order dinner on Pops"; Track 17: Louis continues venting about Johnny Taylor and how he's done nothing important; Eddie "Rochester" Anderson bailed him out of jail but Taylor did nothing but harm Anderson; Louis plays record," And the Angels Sing" (Jones Brothers); continues complaining about Johnny Taylor in the background; Louis wants to say, "Get out of here!" if he sees him tonight; Louis complains about the motives of his black friends, asking "Where's the elevation"; Louis quotes Duke Ellington about the race, "We ain't ready, yet." Track 18: Conversation continues; Louis asks Trummy Young to put his record on but is told they already played it; talk about leaving to make sure they'll catch the train; Louis is not going to rush because "I don't give a fuck if I ever go home"; Louis leaves it up to Doc Pugh; Louis doesn't want to go home "all beat"; Pugh tells him to "name the time"; Louis tells him he's married now and it's not necessary for him to stay up; more conversation as Velma worries that Louis is losing time on his tape by continuing to record between songs; Louis calls it "impromptu"; Clyde Jones starts singing "You Won't Be Satisfied"; Track 19: "Low Down Blues" (unknown singer); Track 20: "The Man I Love" (Clyde Jones); Track 21: Louis discusses his index and tape catalog; "Air Mail Special" (Benny Goodman, Charlie Christian); Track 22: "Rose Room"; (Benny Goodman, Charlie Christian); Track 23: Louis says there's room for one more record; After some discussion, they pick "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams" (Louis Armstrong) (incomplete). |
