This folder contains letters and other mail sent to Louis Armstrong from senders with last names ranging from "King" to "Oglesby." Contents include: Fan letter and autograph request from Jean King; envelope with a nte from Anthony Kopaz, attempting to start a music publishing company (originally included a publicity photo now included in Photos of the Louis Armstrong Collection); fan letter and autograph request from George E. Larrabee; six-page handwritten letter and envelope from Alvin S. Larsen, discussing his love of Louis, how he started playing the trumpet and how hard times have made him sell his horn and records (asks Louis if he can recommend a welfare center that could get him a free horn); autograph request from Clifford A. Larkin after thanking Louis for a great performance at Basin Street East; invitation from the League of Ghana Patriots to a lecture on "The African Personality" at the New School in New York on March 3, 1961; letter from Harry Lewis of West Coast Music Distributors, sending along three songs for Louis's consideration, "And Now My Dream," "Thanks a Lot," "It's Your Kiss I Miss Tonight" (all three songs, written by Harold Shelton, can be found in Scores of the Louis Armstrong Collection); letter from Robin Chandler Lynn, publicist for Pepsi-Cola, addressed to Louis, Barney Bigard, Billy Kyle, Velma Middleton, Danny Barcelona, Mort Herbert, Trummy Young, Pierre "Frenchy" Tallerie, Doc Pugh, Leroy [Antoine?], Dr. Alexander Schiff and Lucille Armstrong, written after Pepsi's portion of Louis's African tour ended, thanking them for a wonderful time; get-well card from John H. A. Maguire sent to Louis on March 23, 1971; letter from Ben "Satchmo'" Masinga from May 25, 1961, recounting his meeting with Louis in Africa, sending condolences about Velma Middleton's passing and asking Louis for "a break"; letter from Louis Merlin in Paris on December 9, 1960, asking if Louis would participate in a Christmas midnight mass; envelope from Frank Military to Joe Glaser that originally housed a Columbia 45 record of "Cabaret" and "Canal Street Blues" (record can be found at 1987.3.2262); letter from Vic Miller about the song "Space Shift" (acetate can be found at 1987.3.2408); letter from Vera Neuwald of Buenos Aires, unable to find the words for admiring Louis's show at the Opera House the previous evening and asking for a photo to put in her shop; short handwritten note on cardboard from "Nita"; empty envelope from Jack Oglesby, possibly once containing a reel-to-reel tape; letter from Eddie Oliver that originally came with score to "Lincoln's Gettysberg Address" (now found at 1987.13.719b); empty envelope from Stella Oliver. |
