This folder contains letters and other mail sent to Jack Bradley to recipients with last names ranging from "Larson" to "Quinn." Contents include: Letter from Paul A. Larson of November 28, 1972, inquiring about Louis possibly performing with Bunk Johnson in 1938 and/or 1941. Two letters from Floyd Levin inviting "friends" and "Southern California Jazz Club" members to Armstrong's 70th birthday tribute at the Shrine Theatre in Los Angeles on July 3, 1970. (Includes ticker order form/advertisement for the concert.) Handwritten note from Peter and Beverly Lewis, written on a photo copy of the cover of "Jazz Monthly," September 1967, featuring a picture of Louis. Handwritten note from Peter and Beverly Lewis, with a color reproduction of a 1930s advertisement for a Louis live performance on the top part of the paper. Handwritten note from Peter and Beverly Lewis, including photos of them with their pets. Handwritten letter from saxophonist Preston Love, mentioning a Bradley interview about Louis that was "a masterpiece." Handwritten letter from Jim Luce thanking Bradley for "all your help in bringing the message of the real Louis Armstrong to the American people." Eight-page handwritten letter from musician Billy Marshall, discussing his career and love of Louis. Mentions that he believes Louis should retire because his lips are "getting weaker all the time" and he travels too much. (Originally included two snapshots that are now found in the Jack Bradley photo collection, box 19, snapshots, 2006.1.1449 and 2006.1.1450.) Letter from Eric Mas, promising something that Bradley doesn't have about Louis. Handwritten letter from "Melish"on May 12, 1965, with an advertisement for a Louis engagement at Caesar's Monticello, January 21-30, 1966. Handwritten note from Angela Shelf Medearis thanking Bradley for pictures. Letter from Barbara Miller, Acquisitions Editor or the Ardmoor Corporation, August 3, 1989, requesting photos from Bradley's collection for an issue of "Varia" magazine. Letter from Dick Miller, August 22, 1992, saddened because Bradley's no longer on WFCC radio; also wishes him luck on his Louis book. Letter from Mel Minter, August 7, 2001, praising Bradley on his Satchmo Summerfest presentation and enclosing a food ticket from the 2001 Summerfest. Letter from John Nelson, April 28, 2003, who attempted to see some Louis "ephemera" to the Louis Armstrong House and Archives but was turned down by curator Peggy Alexander and is now coming to Bradley for help. Letter from John Nemesh, Advertising Manager of Schaefer Brewing, thanking Bradley for his compliments on Louis's Schaefer beer commercial and agreeing to send him "two six-sheet posters of Mr. Armstrong." Letter from John Newmann of April 25, 2000 who spoke with Bradley and enclosed some snapshots of himself with Louis (see Snapshots box in the Bradley Collection). Short note from Armstrong collector Ed "Zutty" Nickel from July 23, 2001. Letter from John Norris of "Coda" magazine, offering Bradley a boxed set of Armstrong's Verve recordings, September 23, 1983. E-mail from Freddie Nottidge looking for footage for a documentary on New Orleans after Katrina. E-mails from Michael O'Day on October 24, 2002, with scans of a postcard sent by Louis in 1967, complete with an inscription from Louis. Letter from "Pauline" of "Jazz" magazine, setting up an article on Louis and Guy Lombardo's 1966 engagement at Jones Beach, with photos by Bradley and text by Jeann Failows. Letter from Aishah Zuhri Pacheco, Assistant to the Director, of the Louis Armstrong House & Archives, inviting Bradley to the next meeting of the Advisory Board, September 11, 1996. Two-page handwritten letter from "Pat," December 27, 1983, praising all of Louis's virtuous and pleased to learn that Bradley is going to write a book on the subject. Letter from Dante Peine on Hot Club de France stationary from September 30, 1967, all about Louis's illness in Reno and his having to cancel some gigs. Includes a news clipping about Louis being released from the hospital. Peine has harsh words for Joe Glaser. E-mail from Eric Perez, October 14, 2002, signed "Leave It All Behind You." Note from James R. Quinn, offering footage of Louis. |
