This is six-hour, Non-commercial video featuring various jazz artists. A ten-minute documentary from 1972 entitled "Satchmo" opens the tape, hosted by Billy Taylor and featuring a short recap of Armstrong's life along with footage from his funeral (Billy Taylor, Fred Robbins, Peggy Lee and Al Hibbler are heard from) as well as his last engagement at the Empire Room of Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. Almost the rest of the tape is non-Louis, including: "Portrait of an Album," a documentary about the making of Frank Sinatra's "L.A. is My Lady" album with Quincy Jones. "Sentimental Swing," a PBS tribute to the music of Tommy Dorsey. "This is All You've Got," a documentary on Artie Shaw. Performances from Al Jolson, Gene Krupa, Benny Goodman, Harry James, Helen Forrest, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Jimmy Dorsy, Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich and Frank Sinatra. Three excerpts from the "Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson include footage of Louis performing "Hello, Dolly" on the June 22, 1967 episode. The rest of the v ideo features the Mill Brothers, Peggy Lee, Irving Berlin, Woody Herman, Betty Grable and Hoagy Carmichael. |
