Scope: Recording of broadcast of "The Ed Sullivan Show" from Spoleto, Italy on July 19, 1959, continued from 2003.197.23. Recordings of sound recordings. Louis Armstrong and friends at the Hotel Gotham in Detroit. Originally cataloged in ”Tape Catalog #2, Part 1” (see Manuscripts, 1987.2.23). Tape box decorated with photographs (Louis with Gabriele Clonisch, Louis with bassist Billy Cronk). "Johnny" the bellboy enters (they call him "Shorty") and Louis makes him introduce himself on the tape, telling him he's going to play it for all the cats in Harlem; Louis mentions that Velma's told him about this bellboy, who, when asked about the bill, holds up two fingers and says "boom"; Louis mentions producer Joe "Ziggy" Johnson in the room; Louis asks the bellboy if he knows any jokes; he doesn't so Louis tells dirty joke about a "regular porter"; everyone screams with laughter; Louis introduces Billie Wright, who just married A. F. Anderson; Louis relates a joke Billy Eckstine told him about a white man to be hanged, who keeps fainting, and tells a black prisoner this is his first time; Louis mentions Stuff Crouch; Track 9: Billie Wright tells a joke about a mouse; Louis keeps interrupting; Louis wants the bellboy to talk; introduces Flo Patterson; shows her how the tape recorder works and not to let the light get too full; Louis belches ("Goddamn this caviar"); Louis in the background tells her to sing that 13 chord; Track 10: Patterson introduces herself and all the people in the room about the sing the next song; Patterson sings "Ol' Man Mose"; everyone in the room joins in on the "Ol man's" and "we believe's"; Track 11: Big Dink Patterson gets on the microphone and talks to Louis about what he's going to sing; Louis mentions hanging backstage with him at the Apollo in 1936; Louis asks him about "the boy" and asks if he's going to get his act together; Louis talks about Patterson's brother "over there" (in Europe) and turns it into a joke about his brother's reaction to a plate of eggs and sausage; conversation about what to do next; look through records about what to put on next; Patterson turns the microphone over to Stutz Anderson; Anderson suggests "I Cover the Waterhole"; conversation about the tape; Louis tells them they have an hour to fill up; Track 12: Louis tells a joke about going to see Nicodemus and one person brought two cases of liquor and the other mentioned he only had a case of gonorrhea ("Bring that, we're gonna get drunk and drink everything!); conversation about scotch and bourbon; Louis in the background talks about reels; Track 13: Anderson passes the microphone to Flo Patterson; Patterson wants to hear the tape; Louis mentions that he can cut music into any tape and will play a tape where Velma cut into the music to talk about an 11-year-old boy; Patterson says no, and continues talking (slightly tipsy); Patterson sings "The Skeleton in the Closet"; Track 14: Patterson complains that she sang it too high; Stutz Anderson introduces Billie Anderson; they talk for a while, coyly; after some random conversation, Louis gets on the microphone and tells a story about Zutty Singleton and Louis giving him Pluto Water; Louis mimics the sound of Singleton on the toilet and mentions that he sent him a telegram, "Pluto great. Clean house"; Louis mentions they have to turn the tape over; introduces producer Ziggy Johnson; Tracks 15-21: Recording of radio broadcast, "From New Orleans to Hobart," with the Tom Pickering sextet with vocals by Kay Staveley and narration by Ellis Blaine: "When the Saints Go Marchin' In"; Track 16: Blaine mentions how many New Orleans musicians are dead but every time Louis Armstrong picks up his horn, you hear the ghosts of New Orleans; "Basin Street Blues"; Track 17: Introduction to part three of the series, "Portrait of the Blues"; Track 18: "Careless Love"; Track 19: "See See Rider"; Track 20: "St. Louis Blues"; Track 21: "Tin Roof Blues." |
