Description |
Scope: Live recording of a basement jam session (not Louis). Studio record of Chris Clifton. Front of tape box contains a photo of Louis and Gabrielle Clonisch in the 1959 film "La Paloma." Back of tape box includes a photo of Louis and Danny Kaye in "The Five Pennies" and one of Louis and Lucille backstage in Sweden in 1959. Contents (as on compact disc reference copy): Tracks 1-4: Recording of Chris Clifton basement jam session: "On the Sunny Side of the Street"; Track 2: audio letter from Chris Clifton (gives real name Chris Clufetos); mentions meeting Louis at the Chez Paree last November 2 (probably 1953) and how that was the highlight of his life; mentions tape made at a jam session at the basement of his house; talks about how they play the same kind of music; one of his friends was interested in "jiu-jitzu" music but Chris is getting him "back on the straight and narrow again"; Clifton quotes Louis about this music being universal (which Louis wrote to Clifton in a letter from February 6, 1954); talks about playing with a Scottish fellow and getting a letter from a Swedish girl, each of whom idolizes Louis; Clifton's dream is to play second trumpet in Louis's band; how much he appreciates meeting Louis and hopes he listens to this tape; Track 3: "Blues" (Clifton sings lyrics, "They call me Satchmo, cause I play just like my Pops / the reason that I do it is because I think that Pops is tops"); Track 4: "When the Saints Go Marchin' In"; Tracks 5-8: Recordings of Virgil Carl Shamburger sound recordings (from session tape): "River Blues"; Track 6: "Satan"; Track 7: "Good Lord Keep an Eye on Me" (Carl Shamburger); Track 8: "I Know the Backroad of Love"). Track 9: "Going to Shout All Over God's Heaven." |
Notes |
Images on tape box seem to date the collage as one of Armstrong's 1959-1960 works but the contents of the reel are from the early 1970s. Spine of tape box has one of Louis's earlier numbers--18--but it doesn't correspond to the material listed in any of Louis's surviving tape catalogs. |
