This folder contains letters and other mail sent to Doc Pugh. Contents include: Three-page handwritten letter from "Bev," dated June 11, 1957, thanking Pugh for writing her. She didn't receive any money from Joe Glaser and didn't know why Pugh would think she did. Hopes to hear from Louis soon and asks Pugh to have Louis send her "something pretty for my new apt." Handwritten letter from Jack Ogelsby. Mentions enrolling in a photography school. Talks about a girl singer, Janice Ivey, she brought to meet Pugh and Louis and how she's about to "hit it big." Mentions a press party featuring Louis, Lloyd Bridges and Wingy Manone and asks if Pugh could put him in touch with a photographer who took his picture with them. Handwritten letter from Jack Ogelsby from October 30, 1965 to Ruth Pugh with a letter to Doc Pugh attached (dated November 1, 1965). Ogelsby gave Bob Sherman a letter to give to Louis when he saw him in Lake Tahoe but he's not sure if Pugh got it. Mentions having "a ball" with Tyree Glenn, Buster Bailey and Billy Kyle where there. About Pugh's replacement, Bob Sherman, he says, "His job has gone to his head." Mentions that when Louis heard about Pugh retiring, it made him want to retire. Talks about hanging out with Louis, Lucille and Joe Bushkin was at Lake Tahoe. Two-page typed letter from Elliott Jones from November 4, 1965, talking about going to see Louis in Lake Tahoe and being taken aback that Pugh was no longer with him. About seeing Louis, he writes, "I have never seen Louis so tired. I was afraid - really - he'd get sick." But by the next night Louis was fine. Handwritten letter from Olivier and Ninette Keller from February 28, 1966. Inquires about Pugh's health and eye troubles. Mentions attending a Louis concert in January 1961 right before Velma Middleton died. Business card from Olivier Keller with a short note on the back. Letter from Nat Middleton from February 28, 1966. Hung out with drummer James "Coatsville" Harris and talked about Pugh and the deaths of Billy Kyle and Velma Middleton. He wrote this letter the day before Kyle's funeral. Letter from "Daisy," March 21, 1966, She's sorry to hear about Billy Kyle's passing and mentions the last time she saw him was when she brought him, Tyree Glenn, Buster Bailey and Jewel Brown to hear a big band. Handwritten letter from Eunice Birdine, postmarked May 25, 1967. Sends her best and asks him to call her. Sends her best to Louis, as well. |
