This folder contains correspondence that was not sent to or from Louis Armstrong or Jack Bradley. This folder contains letters written from senders with last names ranging from "Allen" to "Failows." Contents include: Letter from Stu Allen to Al "Jazzbo" Collins from January 30, 1962 that features Collins's autograph and the inscription, "Hello Steak face!"; Letter from George Arevalo, Assistant to the Director of the Louis Armstrong House Museum, August 5, 1997, to Irwin Failows, thanking him for his gift in memory of his sister Jeann Failows; Letter from George Arevalo, Assistant to the Director of the Louis Armstrong House Museum, August 5, 1997, to Beverly Lewis-Harris, thanking her for her gift in memory of her friend Jeann Failows; Letter from Ruby Braff to Jeann Failows, July 13, 1991, mentioning a 10-part BBC special on Louis he has on cassette. Letter from Jeann Failows to Madeline Gautier after Louis's Little Rock comments in 1957. Discusses the press coverage and reactions and speculates that Joe Glaser must have had "a few ulcers" over it. Part of a letter from Failows to Gautier in French (mentions Willie "The Lion" Smith, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn and Hot Lips Page). Letter from Jeann Failows to "Gene," October 30, 1968, in which she writes, "'Life is a Cabaret'" sings Louis Armstrong." Letter from Jeann Failows to Gosta Hagglof, August 14, 1968. Mentions that she and Jack Bradley miss him and want to know when he's coming to the United States. She writes that Louis wants them at all of his record dates and such. Mentions a new road manager that is "a thousand times" better than Pierre "Frenchy" Tallerie but still "deserves an award as one of the most awful creatures in the world and in Mr. Glaser's employ." Writes about traveling with Louis to a society party in Philadelphia. Of the people who hired him to play there, "their behavior the epitome of the lowest." She describes how fans fawn and "slobber" all over Louis to show their appreciation and how Louis deals with them. Requests an article on Louis that Hagglof has written and includes an article on Louis written by Jay Andersen. (Two copies) Letter from Jeann Failows addressed to "Dear Friends," from December 22, 1963 about the closing of Jack Bradley's club Bourbon Street. Mentions seeing a lot of Louis, including his spending eight hours at Bourbon Street. |
