Description |
This box contains a series of cut-out images to be used in either scrapbooks or tape box collages (e.g., cut-out photos of fans, friends, family, etc.) made by Louis between 1950 and 1971. Many images are in poor shape, covered by yellowing tape that has stuck together and made some of the words illegible. Images include: Louis cutting a birthday cake with Duke Ellington and Tallulah Bankhead (autographed by Bankhead): Louis and his Orchestra in New Orleans in 1931, visiting the Colored Waif's Home (image has been cut up and is inscribed, "To Peter Davis, Satchmo"); page from a French magazine with two photos of Armstrong's "Secret 9" baseball team, each photo annotated by Louis; news clipping featuring Louis and Lucille arriving in Los Angeles for Louis's birthday celebration at the Shrine Auditorium in June 1970; news clipping from October 15, 1957 about Louis being offered to perform at the University of Arkansas (less than a month after Armstrong's "Little Rock" comments); telegram from a fan requesting a handkerchief; part of a script asking for a medium close-up shot of Louis from "The Glenn Miller Story"; photos and accompanying article about "The Glenn Miller Story"; review of Armstrong concert at Carter Baron Amphitheatre in Washington D. C. on June 27, 1955, mentioning that it was being televised (acetate of this television broadcast can be found at 1987.3.2564). Cliping also has three cut-out pictures taped with it, including one with Velma Middleton; telegram from Jack Cortez welcoming Louis to Las Vegas; cartoon about George Shearing's "Lullaby of Birdland"; cut-out advertisement for the All Stars from July 28,1954, taped on top of two photos of an unknown female entertainer; cut-up birthday card from "Sherry" about Swiss Kriss (incudes part of a wrapper and picture of a toilet); photo of Louis and Georges Rebiz in Denmark; photos of unknown women outside of a house (one photo looks to be young Lucille Armstrong); two collages inadvertantly stuck together, one featuring a photo of Lucille, one featuring Liberace; photo of Louis in Africa in 1956 with entertainer Ajax Bukana; birthday card from Stuff Crouch and his family; news clipping about Gary Crosby and Louis appearing together with quotes from Louis about Gary and Bing Crosby; cut-out blurbs and photo about Louis appearing at the Chez Paree in Chicago on November 2, 1956; Louis's handwritten description of a tape's contents, fallen off the box; photos of Louis and fans; profile of Louis written for the New York Mirror on October 12, 1953 (almost illegible due to old tape), taped to a copy of the sheet music for "Joe Turner's Blues"; 1954 photo of the "Do-Re-Me Trio" autographed by Al Moore (photo also includes Buddy Hawkins and Al Russell). Photo is taped to a ripped piece of paper welcoming the All Stars back to Chicago for a performance at the Blue Note on March 15, 1948. Sign is torn in half with bottom half featuring numerous signatures, possible of Blue Note employees; collage made from Deca album cover for Bing Crosby's "Merry Christmas" album, also including a photo of Louis and cut-out birthday wishes from "Butch and Family"; photo of Louis and Lucille along with cutouts from a Christmas card sent by Rula and Fred Ware; three separate collages stuck together; various small photos and pieces of tape. |
